Long calls for staggered school holidaysPosted: March 24, 2014
Speaking to the Financial Times, Tui Travel chief executive Peter Long said a higher price at the start of July would bring down holiday costs in August.
That, he said, would mean those who could travel at the start of July – people who educated their children privately – would pay more. He added: “You could say they can afford it.”
Long said he believed consumers were embracing the package holiday again.
“There was a period of fashion where customers used to like to talk with their friends and say, ‘Look, we’ve done this ourselves and it’s great. And we think we’ve saved some money’. Now it’s, well, this is actually a lot of hassle,” he added.
Long, 61, said he would not carry on being chief executive “for ever” and would not outstay his welcome.
“But where I am today is I love what I do. I’m very excited by the journey we’re on. I haven’t finished yet,” Long said.
